Before-After: How Architectural Designs Can Mitigate The Effects of Natural Disasters

Architectural Designs have changed the way structures withstand Natural Disasters. By incorporating, resilient materials, innovative engineering techniques and, strategic planning. The designs vary per Natural Disasters However, investing in disaster-resistant  architecture is not just a precaution but a necessity. Here are some examples of how designs can change the effects on structures.
Naturals disasters have always been a fear for many families across the world living in disaster-prone areas. They are something that we as people cannot control even in the slightest bit, and the only thing we can do is learn to live with them. While attempting to mitigate the effects that they have on buildings such as houses with the use of architectural designs.

Before
traditional buildings such as houses often lack reinforcement, making them prone to collapse during an earthquake. Many of them crumple or are even completely destroyed

After
In order to create a more resistant building flexible foundation and reinforced materials such as steel will need to be incorporated.

Techniques

Reinforced concrete, will make the structure more sterdy and better at withstanding intense earthquakes

Shear Walls, are designed to be able to be able to handle the loads and tension  from the movement  of an earthquake

Flood Resistant Structures

Before

Poor drainage systems as well as non-resistant materials often contribute to the catastrophic damage on houses effected by extreme flooding

After

With the use of resistant materials such as concrete which is highly y durable and resistant to water damage damage can be mitigated. However a good idea is to elevate building structure and add flood barriers.

Techniques

Elevate Buildings

In order to create a building that has no basement and has its lowest elevated floor raised above ground level by foundation walls, shear walls, pilings, or columns

Flood Barriers

Fixed installations that allow water to pass in normal conditions

Fire Resistant Structures

Before

Traditional wooden homes in fire prone areas are highly flammable and lead to rapid fire spread and complete distraction

After

the use of fire resistant building materials such as stone, concrete, steel and bricks prevents catastrophic damage.
